Zoological gardens play an important role in popularizing the knowledge about biodiversity and the importance of wild animals’ protection. Sometimes, they also play a vital role in reintroduction of various species to their natural habitats.
This is why we cannot overestimate the role of zoos on the map of contemporary world. Modern facilities become more friendly to the animals and also to people who want to admire them. Big zoos become very popular tourist spots at the map of most interesting attractions. Wroclaw Zoo with Africarium
The zoo in Wroclaw is the oldest in Poland and has a rich collection of animals. In terms of species, it is one of the biggest zoos in Europe. 14,000 animals live here, which are representatives of over 1,100 species. A visit to this zoological garden is a must-see during your stay in Wroclaw and if you want to see at least majority of the complex you have to reserve at least a whole day for it. ITS DMC Poland says that most tourists nowadays concentrate on Africarium part only, which is a super modern, first full-fledged oceanarium in Poland with African animals. Still, it is worth to remember that within the price of one ticket, tourists can admire the whole complex. In a few hours’ visitors have a chance to get to know rare and original animals from all continents of the world.
Poznan Zoos
The city is privileged to have two zoo units. The smaller old one and bigger new one. In terms of the area the bigger zoo is second biggest in Poland. It covers an area of 120.68 ha situated on a hilly forest area with six extensive ponds with a total area of over 13 ha, constituting a natural habitat for the national fauna. ITS DMC Poland states that the vast area of the New Zoo can be explored on foot or travel by park and garden railway trains (three carriages). Passengers can get on and off freely to visit a given part of the garden. The New Zoo is famous for its collection of birds of prey and owls, which is one of the richest in Europe. The Old Zoo in Poznan on the other hand is one of the two oldest zoological gardens in Poland, dating back to the 19th century. It is the oldest continuously operating Polish zoo.
Lodz Zoo with Orientarium
Up till recent years, it was one of the smallest Polish zoos in terms of area. Still, the Municipal Zoological Garden in Lodz has recently overcome the largest expansion in its history. The Orientarium has been built on more than half of the site. It is a large-scale exhibition of land and water fauna and elements of the culture of the oriental zone, i.e., the south-eastern part of Asia. Thanks to the Orientarium (second modern oceanarium in Poland), combined runs for various animals has been created on the site, the garden has also been enriched with a number of species that have never lived in Lodz, such as sharks, rays, orangutans and foggy leopards. Nowadays, Orientarium that is planned to be opened in September of 2021 becomes one of the most interesting zoo facilities in the country. ITS DMC Poland that it is obvious that Lodz Orientarium will be as successful as its Wroclaw’s counterpart Africarium.
Gdansk Zoo
Gdansk Oliwa Zoo covers an area of over 123 hectares of the Tri-City Landscape Park, which makes it the largest facility of this type in Poland in terms of area. The Zoo is inhabited by over 800 animals of about 162 species. Here, you can see animals which already do not live in their natural habitat. The zoo is opened all year round and invites all visitors to nature classes, demonstrative feeding or numerous educational campaigns. Moreover, ITS DMC Poland states that the extensive area of the park is the perfect place for all those who loves long walks.
Warsaw Zoo
It is of course animals’ habitat but it also tells a very interesting WWII story of fight for survival. The first zoos in Warsaw were established at royal courts. The current city’s zoo was opened in 1928. It is located in the very center of the capital and covers an area of 40 hectares. The Warsaw Zoo has over 3.5 thousand animals in its collection, not counting nearly 10,000 fish and countless invertebrates, representatives of over 500 species, including about 40 covered by the endangered species protection under EEP program. There are over 10 indoor facilities in the garden that make visiting the zoo comfortable also in the autumn and winter period. ITS DMC Poland also advices to discover fascinating history of hiding Jewish citizens of Warsaw in the Zoo during WWII.
Summing up, all the above-mentioned zoos are huge and exciting tourist attractions. Of course, they are not the only ones. Some smaller interesting units are situated in Cracow, Katowice, Opole, Bydgoszcz, Torun and Bialystok. It is really worth to visit them to admire biodiversity of our planet and to learn more about animal protection and the important role that zoological gardens play all over the world.
