Alsace is a region located in the north-east of France close to the borders of Switzerland and Germany. It is one of the most visited destinations in France from 25th November to 6th January, as Alsace is famed for its Christmas markets –  the cities and villages are decorated, there are handmade art and craft stalls, gourmet food market stalls,  the smells of pain-d’épices, christmas cakes, hot wine (vin chaud), canelle fills the air and it is where you experience the Christmas ambiance the most.   

It is a region that is also much visited from Spring onwards when all the flowers are in bloom and when each Alsacian village with its typical wooden pane houses along the wine route strives to outdo its neighbours with its flower decorations. The highlights to visit in this region include :

• The city of Strasbourg which is the seat of the European parliament with its four main areas: Cathedral quarter, French quarter, German quarter and little France. Ideally Strasbourg needs more than a day to do this city justice.

• The castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg and its spectacular panoramic view of the Vosges hills and plains.

• A day in Colmar, the capital of Alsace wine, visiting the ‘Little Venice’ area and the old part of the city with its Dominican church, Saint Martin cathedral, Rue des Marchands, Grand Rue, historical houses such as Pfister House and House of heads.

• The wine route of Alsace which runs for 195km from Marlenheim until Thann and is interspersed with vineyards, pretty villages, abbeys, old castles, small chapels, cellars for wine tasting and a multitude of gastonomical restaurants.The villages not to be missed along the route are Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Obernai amongst many others. The grapes used to make the wines of this region are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Sylvaner, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Muscat.
